Book Description:

The Dire Wolves Chronicles continue... After you have sacrificed your freedom what else is there to lose? Mary Anne has given her word to Hunter that she’ll stay as his mate, but every second she spends with him takes her further away from Gage when he needs her the most. Caught between love and duty, Mary Anne discovers that her troubles are just beginning, and that sometimes love comes at a great price.

My Review:

Dusk picks up right where Dire left off.  Gage is in the middle of the change that will save his life.  Hunter is still trying get Mary Anne to truly see him as a mate and Mary Anne is still whining over Gage.

I really loved how we see the side of Hunter I knew was there in Dire.  The less Alpha pushy side and the more considerate, caring, thoughtful side.  He wants Mary Anne to recognize that there is more between them and to let go of this 'love' she has for Gage, but he recognizes this is not something she can go into lightly, not something that she can let go of easily and works hard to allow her the space she needs while still trying to connect with her.

I get frustrated with Mary Anne's inability to look at Hunter as anything other than 'not Gage.'  Now, I am going to just come right out at admit it,  I am 100 percent Team Hunter.  I do not like Gage, there is something about him to be that is disingenuous and thoughtless to me.  Here Hunter tries to give Mary Anne everything she needs, tries to show her affection and kindness all while fighting his natural instincts as an Alpha to just take what he wants, fighting the fact that he knows or believes that Mary Anne is the key to saving his pack and stopping the hunt.  All Gage can do whens ever he gets Mary Anne alone is have sex with her and tell her he loves her (yet he didn't love her until they made out in the first book and were 'kidnapped' by Hunter's Pack)  Mary Anne's feelings may be honest, she has secretly pined after Gage for years, but that just isn't the case for Gage and it drives me to insanity.

Me, every time Gage professes his love for Mary Anne

I really enjoyed meeting a few new characters, particularly Denny, it is clear he is going to play a big role in the upcoming book and I would really like to get more of his story...a spinoff maybe? We get to see more of the pack especially Chet and Marni, although I can't figure out exactly what is going on with Marni, what game is she playing?  Quite often I found myself questioning the loyalty of Hunter's pack, poor guy is fighting battles I am not even sure he is aware of.

Although there are times I'd like to smack Mary Anne, Alyssa does a great job at making her relatable and making her situation understandable.  How would one feel in her situation.  How does she let go of a love she has harbored for years, how does she let go of her past, her family and friends.  She is hurting, she's confused, and she's scared.  I really appreciate that about Alyssa's writing, the fact that she is able to convey all of these feelings and emotions clearly.  It is also great to see her bringing in characters from a separate series, we only get a small glimpse of the two characters from The Crescent Chronicles but I have a feeling we will see more of them in book three, Dawn.

So now I wait and pray that when book three gets here I will be one happy reader, but after the ending I am anxious and worried.  If you like Paranormal Romance you will really enjoy this read.  It's packed full of feelings and action.  I can't wait to find out if you are Team Gage or TEAM HUNTER (ahem)

Excerpt

“Hunter?” she asked in a low voice as we sat in front of the fire downstairs. We’d started back with our favorite evening ritual, only now she sat right at my side. The rest the pack was giving us plenty of space. There were benefits to being Alpha.
“Yes?” I smiled at her. She was so beautiful. I zeroed in on her lips, needing to claim them with my own.
“Tell me about your dreams.”
“My dreams?” I put an arm around her and pulled her down into my side. I could feel her heartbeat and that put me at ease. “What kind of dreams?”
“What kind do you have?”
“The usual types I guess.”
“Are they ever about me?” She looked up at me with those expressive eyes of hers.
“You mean now? Are you asking if I dream about you?”
“Now. Before.”
“Before? Why would I have dreamed about you before I met you? How would that be possible?” Someone had told her something. That someone was going to be in a lot of trouble.
“How is it possible that you’re a wolf? I’m starting to believe that anything is possible.”
I ignored her use of the term wolf. It wasn’t worth an argument. She’d start calling us Dires eventually. “Do you really want to know?” The can of worms had been opened. There was no turning back.
“Yes. Why else would I ask?”
“Come here.” I gestured with my hand.
“I am here.”
“On to my lap.” If she wanted something from me, I was getting something from her.
“You want me to sit on your lap?”
“You know exactly what I’m asking you to do.”
She put a leg over mine and straddled my lap. She settled herself down, awakening my body even more than it already was. “Happy now?”
“I’m always happy when you’re with me.”

Don’t miss DIRE, the first book in The Dire Wolves Chronicles…

  Dire

Book Description:

Dire: The Dire Wolves Chronicles Gage was the first guy I ever wanted. He was my first crush and my first fantasy, but he wasn't my first in any other way because he never saw me as anything more than a friend— at least not until the night that changed everything. It was all Gage's fault. He insisted we drive through the storm and take the back roads. By the time the storm hit full force we had no chance. One night of snowbound sex changed our relationship forever. The problem was at the same time I caught another guy’s attention. This other guy happened to be the alpha of a pack of shifter wolves. I thought the wolves were the worst of my problems, but I was wrong. When things went from bad to worse I had to make a lifelong sacrifice to save Gage, but what price is too much to save the one you love?
