Book Description:

Eighteen-year-old Cora Jemison knows what it’s like to date a soul reaper. There are no Friday night movies, no school dances, and no stolen kisses between classes. It totally sucks! What makes it even worse, souls pop up when she least expects it. The last one is not her fault, but it all adds up to zero quality time with her super hot, scythe-carrying boyfriend, Echo.

Since Cora was etched with special runes by an evil Immortal, she understands why souls are drawn to her. She makes the best of it by helping souls find closure while Echo escorts them to the realm of the dead. Perfect partners, until a dark soul visits Cora in the dead of the night and Echo decides her soul-helping days are over.

Cora can either listen to Echo or follow her instincts. To make matters worse, other reapers start stalking her, demanding she hand over the soul. Even her Valkyrie friends think she’s gone too far. But something sinister is coming their way, and the soul is the key to saving her town, her friends, and her relationship with Echo. Can she convince Echo to see things her way before it’s too late?

My Review:

First let me begin by saying that:
1. Although this is considered a spin off series I strongly recommend that you read the Runes series first.  This is book two in the Grimnirs Series, but also considered book five in the Runes series and things could get confusing for you if you don't read the other 4 Rune books first.

2. Being that this is a second book in one series and a fifth in another I will try really hard not to give away any spoilers in the review but I say read ahead cautiously.

Now, to the review and what you really need to know....ECHO

Yeah, Echo.  This may be Cora's book but what I really wanted was more Echo and I got him!  But...we will come back to him in a minute, let's talk Cora right now.

Cora is exactly who you expect her to be in this book.  She's the girl that fights for what she believes in, fights for those she loves, and fights for those who can't fight for themselves.  She is a wonderfully written strong, independent female character.  Incredibly sweet and kind with a side of bad ass and a whole lot of snark and sass.  I've thoroughly enjoyed watching her grow from Raine's side kick into her contemporary.  She's been thrust into a scary world and is making it work for her.  I love that she doesn't see the world as right or wrong, she's willing to be a voice of reason, listen to all sides of a story and not give up on someone based only on what she has been told by others .  Yes, she knows there is evil out there and we see plenty of it this book, but instead of giving into the fear of evil or even perceived evil she's willing to fight for what she knows is right even if it means she has to fight against the very people who are trying to protect her.

In this book Cora has wholly accepted her powers, she may not understand them, and she questions herself along the way but she knows that having them gives her a chance to make a difference in the world and she's absolutely ready to take that on.  I also love how she realizes early on that she can't do it all on her own.  She isn't one of those heroines determined to keep secrets (well, there is some of that going on) and do everything alone, no she sucks it up and accepts that she needs help and that she has an amazing group of friends that are there for her and willing to stand by her side even when their worlds are turned upside down.

Speaking of, Ednah Walters pulls past characters seamlessly into this book (although I have a whole lotta questions about Eirik), and the new characters introduced, Dev ( I need MORE Dev), Rhys, Nara (This is one place Cora and I disagreed upon, I'd have choked Nara back, hahaha), will leave you totally intrigued and wanting more.

Then there is the man himself Echo....goodnight could there be a more swoon worthy character?  Torin?  Torin Who?  I loved getting to know more of his background and to learn the somewhat startling truth about he and his Grimnir 'brothers and sisters', something I was truly surprised, but oh so happy to learn.  It puts all of  'Echo's Grimnirs', especially Echo in a different light.  The relationship between he and Cora is wonderful to see, it is full of love, trust, acceptance, and romance.  Romance, Echo might think he doesn't have a romantic bone in his body but every other word out of his mouth makes you want to fan yourself.  He's a truly beautiful soul and I adore that Cora can see that in him.  Their relationship will just make your heart swoon and soar all at once.  There are really not enough words to describe how amazing I think that he is, please if for nothing else pick up this book for Echo, he is worth it!  *grins*

Ednah Walters really went above and beyond with this one.  She will take you on an amazing journey full of love and friendship with some awesome actions scenes thrown in to keep you on your toes.  I am so looking forward to more, there are some great new possible romances coming up, there are still stories that need to unfold (Eirik and Dev) and more opportunity  to see some of our favorite characters making their way in a difficult world and staying true to themselves and each other along the way.

If you are a Paranormal Fan this is a great choice for you! While I didn't think this was really what I would consider a New Adult book there are some intense and suggestive scenes so take advantage of the 'clean' version she is offering on Amazon if you have younger readers who have been following this series.  And get ready Witches will be out before we know it!
